Gay out for season

The Memphis Grizzlies have announced that star forward Rudy Gay will miss the remainder of the season.

The team was hopeful that the forward would be able to return for the final month and the playoffs.

However, it has been determined that he will need surgery on his injured shoulder, ending his season.

It’s a big blow for the Grizzlies, who have played better than expected and remained in the thick of the postseason hunt. (Read More…)

Grizzlies acquire Battier

The Memphis Grizzles have acquired forward Shane Battier from the Houston Rockets for center Hasheem Thabeet and a draft pick.

The move by the Grizzlies shows that they are serious about trying to grab the final playoff spot in the Western Conference despite the loss of Rudy Gay.

The team also attempted to trade guard O.J. Mayo to the Indiana Pacers, but the deal wasn’t completed before the deadline.

Thabeet has been a huge disappointment with Memphis, so maybe a change of scenery is what he needs. The center has spent time in the D-League and been a non-factor at the NBA level. (Read More…)

Gay could miss a month with shoulder injury

Memphis Grizzlies star forward Rudy Gay is expected to miss at least four weeks with a shoulder injury.

Gay partially dislocated his left shoulder in the team’s win over the Philadelphia 76ers, but at least it isn’t his shooting shoulder.

He is expected to undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the damage, but the Grizzlies are optimistic that it isn’t too serious.

With Memphis making a surprising push for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference, they cannot afford to be without their top player. (Read More…)

Mayo suspended 10 games

Memphis Grizzlies star guard O.J. Mayo has been suspended 10 games by the NBA for violating the anti-drug program.

Mayo said he was very disappointed that he will miss 10 games and that it was a positive test from an over-the-counter supplement.

He claims it was an honest mistake and apologized to the organization for the consequences of his actions.

The team released a statement saying that they would continue to support Mayo despite his error in ways. (Read More…)

Grizzlies ban gambling on plane

The Memphis Grizzlies banned gambling on their team plane after a fight broke out between two players.

O.J. Mayo and Tony Allen got into a dispute over unpaid money resulting from gambling in a card game.

Allen wanted Mayo to pay up on his debt, and it eventually lead to several players getting involved to separate the two.

Interestingly enough, it was this same scenario that sent the Gilbert Arena-Javaris Crittenton situation spiraling out of control in Washington last year. (Read More…)

Grizzlies give Conley big deal

The Memphis Grizzlies have signed point guard Mike Conley to a five-year contract extension worth $40 million.

Conley has gotten off to a fast start this season, making believes out of the Grizzlies organization.

Still, this move seems a bit premature considering the club was thinking he might be traded or released not that long ago.

Conley said the deal is a testament to all of the hard work he has put in to make himself a better player. (Read More…)

Grizzlies not high on Conley

The Memphis Grizzlies are not real high on point guard Mike Conley as he heads into the final year of his contract.

The team has been unable to orchestrate a trade with the young guard and will likely let him go via free agency after next season.

For the final year of his contract, the Grizzlies are reluctant to name him the starting point guard.

The Grizzlies drafted Greivis Vasquez in the first round of the NBA Draft with hopes he might take hold of the starting point guard job. (Read More…)

Vasquez could need surgery

Memphis Grizzlies rookie point guard Greivis Vasquez may need surgery on his troublesome ankle.

Vasquez put forth a less than inspiring performance during the NBA summer league play, and his ankle injury certainly didn’t help matters.

He had trouble running the team’s offense, so he really can’t afford to miss any significant time.

It’s unknown whether or not he will need surgery, so that will determine how much time he may miss. (Read More…)

Grizzlies hope to overcome geography on playoff journey

By Bud L. Ellis

Oh, were it not for the geographically challenged NBA, the Memphis Grizzlies could start printing playoff tickets.

OK, that may be overstating things just a bit. Still Memphis, nestled on the banks of the Mississippi River, plays in the Western Conference. And in the wild wild West, the Grizzlies’ 26-25 record is good for 11th in the standings, a full three games out of the conference’s final playoff spot (currently occupied by Portland).

Were Memphis in the East – NBA speaking, of course – the Grizzlies would stand tied for sixth with Charlotte. Still, with some good ball in its final 31 games, Memphis can challenge for a playoff berth in the West. But the Grizzlies lost six of 10 coming into the All-Star break, and needs to find its stride as the season picks back up this week.

Memphis returns to action Wednesday at Toronto, which sits fifth in the East but has a record only 2 ½ games better than the Grizzlies. Friday, Memphis plays host to Miami, and travels to New Jersey on Sunday to meet the 4-48 Nets.

Grizz’s Surprise Playoff Run Hits Cavs Speedbump

Leave it to LeBron James to derail the plans of any other potential contender.

With the Memphis Grizzlies having come on extremely hot as of December, the Grizz have an All-Star in Zach Randolph and are thinking playoffs in the first time in years. For a franchise that drafted No.2 overall this past June, the turnaround has been dramatic, to say the least.

Unfortunately for the Grizz, they ran into a motivated Cavaliers team in Cleveland on Tuesday night…and that usually doesn’t end well for the Cavs’ opponent. This night was no different, as the Cavs won 105-89 thanks to inspired play from LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal.

James posted 22 points, six rebounds, and 15 assists, while Shaq went 13/13 with four blocks in 21 minutes.

Regarding James, Memphis coach Lionel Hollins only had words of praise.

“He sees things other players don’t see,” Hollins said. “He attacks the basket and throws it out for a 3. He attacks the basket, then throws it for a layup. He gets the ball on one side, he’s not looking, but he sees the guy and whips it all the way across the court for another 3-pointer.

“He’s just a great player. I don’t know much more that you can say about him,” he said.

Off-nights from Zach Randolph (eight points on 3-of-14 shooting) and O.J. Mayo (10 points on 4-of-15 shooting) doomed the Grizzlies, as the Cavs’ tenacious D pressured them into low-percentage shots all night long.

Memphis has a chance to turn it around Friday night at home against Houston.
